Step Into the Story: Our Children Can Soar
Sat, Jan. 19 & Mon, Jan. 21 | 11:30am – 1:30pm
The St. Louis Black Authors of Children’s Literature presents a reading of author Michelle Cook’s book Our Children Can Soar: A Celebration of Rosa, Barack, and the Pioneers of Change. Story readings are at 11:30am, 12:15pm, and 1:00pm and will be narrated by local authors. This event is open for attendees to stop by at any point during the two-hour time frame for a collective brainstorming session about future dreams and ways to make a positive impact in the community.
Dream with Shane W. Evans
Mon, Jan. 21 | 12:30pm – 1:15pm
Author and illustrator Shane W. Evans will give a reading (and signing) of his book on 1963’s March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom titled, We March, along with a performance of live music, a discussion about the meaning behind ‘MLK Day’ and an audience participation segment that allows for an educational, engaging experience. Everyone in the family can attend and enjoy this event, as the Missouri Historical Society’s website writes, “whether you’re 5 or 105, Evans’ presentation will spark the imagination of your inner child.”
King Family Kids Movement Workshops
Sat, Jan. 19 & Mon, Jan. 21 | 1:45pm – 2:30pm & 2:45pm – 3:30pm
Children can learn about segregation and how it affected Dr. King in his youth with a “story-dance journey” led by Mama Lisa. This fun, hands-on activity is an interactive learning opportunity you won’t want your children to miss.
