Immediate Opening: Finance Director

Established in 1859 Guardian Angel Settlement Association (GASA) exists to serve people living in poverty by helping them improve the quality of their lives and become economically independent. Best known for Head Start and Early Head Start Programs, GASA also offers a wide array of social services including both emergency programs (rental, utility, prescription and food assistance) and long-term self-sufficiency services that provide pathways out of poverty. The Agency also operates a resale shop, the Angel Boutique. These programs help bring stability and hope to those in need.

Guardian Angel Settlement Association is seeking a Finance Director.  This is a full-time, exempt position. The Finance Director is an important member of the senior management team and is responsible for managing all fiscal and accounting functions to support Guardian Angel’s operations. Responsibilities include managing the accounts payable and account receivable cycles, closing and reconciling the records monthly, producing monthly and special financial reports, reviewing and preparing grant reports, and managing the audit and budgeting processes. The scheduled hours for the position are flexible to meet the demands of the position, including occasional evening and weekend hours. The position is supervised by the CEO.

A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in accounting with 3-5 years of accounting experience. Two years in public/nonprofit accounting strongly preferred. Familiarity with Peachtree or similar computerized accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite also required. Ability to work with a broad range of staff, board and volunteer members in a positive manner. Strong writing and presentation skills, organized, detail-oriented, ability to work independently with minimal supervision and the ability to exercise confidentiality and exhibit highly ethical behavior also required. Previous leadership/supervisory experience preferred. Ability and willingness to buy into the mission of the organization is essential.

18th Annual Back-to-School Program is coming August 13

As summer winds down, most of us at some point reflect back on happy childhood memories of preparing for the school year.  Remember the anticipation of seeing who was in your class; picking out the right clothes; and getting new school supplies like pencils, pens, erasers, notebooks, backpacks, folders, paper, binders and so much more. Sound familiar?

Unfortunately, too many of today’s school-aged children in the city of St. Louis won’t share the memory of getting new school supplies without your help.

Please join Guardian Angel Settlement Association to make our 18th Annual Back-to-School Program another A+ effort.

This year, GASA’s Back-to-School Program will be held on

Saturday, August 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Peabody Elementary School, 1224 S. 14th Street, St. Louis, MO, 63104.

Your donations provide backpacks, school supplies and a new pair of shoes to 800 children in elementary, middle and high school who are from low-income families; and, enables GASA to make its other year-round programs accessible to thousands of families in our community.

2016 Guardian Angel Auction Night Sets New Fundraising Record


On April 30th, almost 300 Guardian Angel friends gathered at the Sheraton Westport for the 2016 Angels on Broadway Dinner & Auction. The night was filled with fun activities, wonderful prizes and a few show-stopping surprises.

“It was an amazing night that presented a forum for our team to communicate the success and impact at our organization over the last year”, said Jessica Brandon, GASA CEO.

During the night, the auction became very lively as attendees congratulated each other on won items.  Many stood to recognize and celebrate Guardian Angel’s accomplishments through the year as well.

Upon final tally, this year’s Auction set a new fundraising record.  Total funds raised were $265,395.

Brackets for Good 2016

Join in the games on February 26th, 2016 at 8:00 PM with Brackets for Good a competitive giving tournament.

What is Brackets for Good? Based on college basketball tournaments it’s a fundraising competition for local nonprofits. This is St. Louis’s first year and Guardian Angel is proud to be one of the 65 nonprofits choose to participate. Each round, two nonprofits will face off against one another to see who can get the most points and spread awareness for their cause. Participating nonprofits have a chance to win $10,000 if they make it to the championship. We need you to help us achieve this goal by spreading the word and playing along.
The games begin Friday, February 26th at 8:00 pm. All funds raised by Guardian Angel during the games will go back toward supporting our social programs and early education efforts so everyone wins.

Back To School 2015

Dear Friends,

In just two months children across St. Louis will be starting a new school year. Whether its their first day of kindergarten or their senior year, the stakes will be high. How they perform will lay the foundation for their future.

Proper school supplies are important to educational success. Having items like paper, pencils, notebooks and backpacks give children the confidence and tools to apply what they learn in the classroom. For families that cannot afford the expense, the Guardian Angel Back-to-School Program is a big help.

You can help low-income children prepare for school by donating new backpacks and school supplies to elementary, middle and high school students who participate in the program. In 2014, the Program served over 600 children!

Guardian Angel partners with other organizations to keep costs low and serve as many children as possible, ensuring your donation will have the greatest impact possible!

Celebrate National Volunteer Week with GASA

Celebrate Nation Volunteer Week by kicking it off with GASA on April 11th, 2015 for Spring Cleaning!  You can choose from volunteering at our social services site (2700 Cherokee St.) or childcare center (1127 N. Vandeventer) and help us freshen up for spring.  Activities include light yard word, playground maintenance, gardening, painting, moving furniture, dusting and light cleaning.  All you need to bring is a positive attitude and a willingness to get the job done!  The event is from 8 am to Noon Saturday morning and the perfect opportunity for groups and youth to get involved.

We hope to see you there: Spring Cleaning 2015: April 11th.  Please RSVP by April 3rd.

April 2015 Clean Up 2.0

While Spring Cleaning is going on, we will also have a special drop off zone at 27oo Cherokee Street for donations to our resale shop, during the 8 am to Noon hours.  Bring your own spring cleaning results and recycle them to a good cause: the Angel Boutique.  The Angel Boutique accepts gently used clothing, handbags, shoes, accessories, and household goods.  We would love to see you, and your “stuff”, there and hope to see you again at our Grand Opening this Spring!

Social Services Is Moving

On January 19 2014, Guardian Angel will be closing its Social Services site at 2635 Gravois Avenue (formerly known as Hosea House).

Social Services at Guardian Angel and the Angel Boutique will re-open on March 9, 2015 at 2700 Cherokee Street!

The new location will be only 4 minutes driving distance away from the old location. The new Cherokee Street location will help Guardian Angel provide an even higher level of service to the community.

Christmas Program 2014

Season’s Greetings,

With a little time and support, many people can get their lives back on track. Renee, a young single mother of three knows this all too well. She graduated from college recently and is starting a new career in 2014. That journey seemed impossible a year ago. After several surgeries, Renee was forced to drop out of school and quit working, leaving her unable to care for her children. Her world unraveled when inspectors scheduled her home for condemnation.

Guardian Angel Settlement Association was able to help Renee find an apartment and provide her with utility assistance, budgeting help and community resources while she got healthier. This year she was able to go back and finish college, which prepared her for work in the medical industry.

Your donations help Guardian Angel assist thousands of St. Louisians like Renee every year. Thanks to you, our services kept parents working, young children learning, seniors living in their own homes, and food on the table for more than 7,000 people in 2014. We were also able to offer new programs, like a self-sufficiency workshop series.

2014 Christmas Program

The Annual Christmas Program, co-sponsored by Kingdom House and St. Vincent DePaul Parish, is another great way to help people in need! Your donations will provide gifts, clothing and food to 600 families and 500 seniors. Any surplus will support our important year-round services. 2014 Giving Guidelines are below and a suggested items list is enclosed.

  • Children – Donate new, unwrapped toys and clothing. (all ages/genders), worth $25
  • Parents – Donate new, unwrapped clothing and household items, worth $25
  • Seniors – Donate one new, wrapped requested item per senior, worth $30
  • All – Donate food staples and household items.

Thanksgiving Dinner 2014

Dear Friend:

Thanksgiving is a wonderful time of the year to gather at home with family, or to spend as guests of relatives, friends and acquaintances. It is an occasion to share memories or create new ones. Most of all, it is a chance to express thanks for all that is good in our lives. However, for the less fortunate, Thanksgiving can be a harsh reminder of financial struggles.

Did you know 50 Million Americans go hungry every day? That is 1 out of 6 people, 2 out of 3 seniors and 1 out of every 5 children. In zip codes 63104 and 63118 where Guardian Angel provides hunger relief at its food pantry, about 11,000 St. Louisians must decide each month whether to eat less or use money meant for other household expenses towards groceries. In fact, hunger in Guardian Angel’s service region is almost twice the national average. For these families, Thanksgiving can be an unnecessary source of anxiety and hardship.

Guardian Angel Settlement Association and St. Vincent DePaul’s Parish co-sponsor a community dinner on Thanksgiving Day to nourish the body and mind of those in need. Open to the public, this event feeds over 600 people, including families, seniors and the homeless each year. You can give relief and hope to others by making a monetary donation, or by giving turkeys and other food items to support this community dinner. As always, surplus donations support year-round programming for those struggling with poverty.
